How Confidence Shapes Your Life
Confidence is a core part of how you navigate your life, make decisions, and view your own self-worth and potential. When your confidence is strong, doors open and possibilities appear endless. When it’s shaken, every lift feels heavy, clunky, and even more difficult to negotiate. Without realizing it, low confidence quietly closes doors long before the world does–personally and professionally. And when that happens, life (and all its amazing opportunities) can quickly pass you by.
But here’s the truth: there is something you can do about it!
Confidence isn’t something you are born with or without. It’s something that can be ignited, strengthened, and reclaimed at any stage of your life. Once you begin to focus on and develop your own voice, skills, talent, and potential, you will naturally step into your own power, and from there, everything shifts.
Your world expands.
Your choices get bolder.
Your relationships get healthier.
And your dreams get realized!
Beth Mahn, tenured HR professional and Leap to Success board member, shared this valuable piece of advice: “Confidence is essential in navigating and feeling comfortable in your own skin. It is recognizing (and acting on) what you bring to the table. That’s the crux–identifying what makes you unique and what talent you bring with you. Also, having a growth mindset and focusing on personal development are number one in today’s workplace.”
Sometimes, discovering your confidence begins with simply pausing to recognize what makes you uniquely you. What strengths come naturally? Which talents do others consistently appreciate? What tasks light you up at work? Are you energized by people, or do you thrive when working independently? Taking honest inventory of your gifts is often the first step toward seeing—and believing in—your own potential.
Also, are you looking for opportunities for personal development? “Our brains inherently want to stay in the same situation and not necessarily evolve,” Beth Mahn continues. “However, I have learned that the more you show up, the more you learn, and the more you do, the more you build the muscle to adapt and grow. The only thing life can guarantee us is change, and getting comfortable in that space of growth (to the best of your ability) is really important to your confidence, not to mention keeping up with a fast-changing environment. It’s not always easy, but we all have to get on board and row the canoe toward the future.”
Here are 7 simple steps to get you started:
- Start by creating a list of your strengths, values, and the stories you tell yourself. When you understand what is at your foundation and what you bring to the table, you can build upward from there.
- Challenge your inner critic. Replace negative thoughts with truth, hope, and compassion. Your inner voice is your ally, not an obstacle to overcome.
- Invest in learning. Read, take classes, ask questions, and surround yourself with people who know more than you. Take our Leap to Confidence program–it will only cost you time and energy, and the feeling of empowerment you achieve is priceless!
- Set small, courageous goals! Each accomplishment, no matter how miniscule, will prove to yourself that you are capable, strong, and powerful beyond what you thought possible!
- Exercise your voice. Find opportunities to speak up in rooms–share ideas, advocate for yourself and others, offer words of encouragement, and be seen and heard. Your voice can’t help but grow stronger!
- Find your village. Confidence expands in community, so surround yourself with people who believe in you, especially on days when you don’t believe in yourself. Who you have in your corner matters!
- Celebrate your wins! Take a moment each day to celebrate your accomplishments, even if all you did was get out of bed and show up. Acknowledge your growth, courage, and forward movement! Every day, you are one step closer to the life you have always dreamed of!
