What is Confidence?

OK, we have officially started The Confidence Project.  So, what exactly is confidence?  Excellent question, but not so easy to answer because it looks and feels a little different to each one of us.  The dictionary sums it up as a noun representing a feeling of full trust or belief in something or someone, and for the purposes of this conversation, that someone would be yourself.

New on the scene to this endeavor to better understand the idea of confidence, and in the process learn how to get more of it, I am again inclined to share another of my favorite answers from my “research” to date.

This answer also comes from a recent participant in July 2012’s Communicate With Confidence class.   I asked her the same three questions, “What if you were confident…how would you feel?  What would you do?  Who would you be?”  She answered, “I would feel beautiful, strong and I could accomplish anything.  I used to feel like that.”  This answer struck something deep inside me because she speaks of losing her confidence.  With something as important as confidence, I don’t know which is worse, never having had much of it at all or having it, loosing it and being faced with the business of getting it back.

But, luckily, as the language inherently implies; if you have lost something, then it’s possible to find it.  So, what would you tell someone who has lost their confidence?  How can we help other women who find themselves remembering a time when they felt beautiful and strong and capable of accomplishing anything but just can’t muster those feelings anymore?  Be a part of our Confidence Project and post your answers here!

The History of Juneteenth
Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a community space where this spirit of hope lives on. A place where historical events like Juneteenth are shared and new stories with equal urgency are told.
