Transforming Lives

THE JOURNEY FROM HOPELESS TO EMPOWERED

Life can be very difficult when you:

  • Experience verbal, emotional, and/or physical abuse
  • Self-soothe though alcohol or drugs
  • Lose your job and have difficulty finding a new one
  • Lose a loved one, experience death or divorce
  • Become depressed, isolated, and lose hope

These situations can lead to feeling that one is powerless.

Empowerment Creates Transformation

Leap to Success Banner Campaign 2012 - ConfidentOur students are provided tools and experience to help them develop new habits and skills. As we all know, if we want to get new results in our lives, we need to act in new ways. In order to change our life, we have to change ourselves.

The life-changing skills we teach include how to:

  • Acknowledge yourself positively
  • Set goals and take actions
  • Reframe negative thoughts and beliefs with positive affirmations
  • Be able to give and receive support
  • Share ideas, visions and goals with others
  • Set and manage boundaries
  • Speak up for yourself and learn to say “no” when you want and need to
  • Make the best of how you present yourself with dress, style, and colors
  • Release shame and share the power of your story

Which ultimately allows you to:

  • accept your past and what you have learned
  • release that which no longer serves you
  • acknowledge who you’ve become as a result of adversity—a victor, not a victim
  • serve others by sharing the hope and inspiration from the story of your success

Beauty unfolds, hearts are healed, and as powerful words are spoken, lives are transformed.

The History of Juneteenth
Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a community space where this spirit of hope lives on. A place where historical events like Juneteenth are shared and new stories with equal urgency are told.
