How We Won Advance San Diego

By Dana Bristol-Smith

Group_email

I agonized and struggled writing this 3 minute speech. How could I encapsulate and convey how lives were changing in Leap to Success programs in just 3 minutes? I was guided by the help of mentors and coaches through Social Venture Partners and terrific presentation coaches Chris Witt and Jeff Bucholtz. Our whole team was there with support! I love the photo!

We had a winning idea (really, a secret weapon) that worked out beautifully. So beautifully in fact, that out of 85 organizations we were selected as the First Prize $25,000 winner.

Here’s the Advance San Diego Competion (scroll to 38.55 for our presentation)

In our Transformation Leadership program, women recovering from trauma and adversity are learning to speak to themselves with kindness, courage, and conviction. They’re becoming mentors, role models, and community leaders — all because someone believed in them.

That someone is YOU.

Thank you for investing in confidence, healing, and leadership.

“If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.” –Buddha

There is an art to self-compassion, extending grace to oneself in times of perceived failure, inadequacy, and suffering. More often than not, women are superstars when it comes to extending grace to others, but when it comes to offering themselves a little bit of kindness and self-compassion, there seems to be neither the time nor the tendency.

Being kind to yourself can often feel selfish, taking time away from caring for others. But the truth is that self-compassion, whether you take time to meditate, exercise, or enjoy a power nap every day, enhances your confidence, strength, and capacity to give to others.

According to Stanford Medicine’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, it feeds and waters your happiness, optimism, and overall satisfaction in life. So, give yourself a little grace today–rest, recharge, and rise again!
